Virtual Worlds Almanac
The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) recently unveiled a wiki called the Virtual Worlds Almanac, an online catalog of virtual-world environments that allows users to edit and contribute information. Educators and students can refer to the site for information about a host of virtual environments, including Second Life, as well as education-specific virtual worlds such as Whyville. "We hope this will make it easier for the community to collaborate and to keep abreast of innovations and new product offerings," said FAS President Henry Kelly in a press release. "FAS is interested in the potential virtual worlds offer for education and learning." As of press time, the site contained information on 86 different virtual-world environments. Users can find virtual worlds that match their interests by searching according to criteria such as intended audience (children, pre-teens, teens, adults), purpose (community, education, gaming, marketing, professional), language, platform, name, or relevant features.

Masterful mentoring newsletter
The Effects of Proximity on MentoringGeographical differences are common in mentoring, creating unique mentoring dynamics for partners; seeing your partner face-to-face can impact you differently than only meeting with your partner virtually. Collaboration efforts can be affected by physical proximity, with what is often referred to as the 50 feet (15 meters) rule: People are less likely to collaborate if they are more than 50 feet apart. This does not mean that face-to-face relationships are better than mentoring at a distance; it just means that partners must be aware of potential issues so they can address them.
The reality is that with the ever-increasing use of communication technologies, most mentoring relationships operate outside of the 50 feet rule. As a result, mentoring partners today must be particularly concerned with initiating conversations, establishing common ground, and maintaining awareness.

Copyright & Intellectual Property Rights in the Web 2.0/digital world (JISC)
This new tool and animation has just been released by JISC in the UK. "The web2rights tool is of an extremely high quality, blending sound legal and policy advice with pragmatic solutions to ensure that IPR is not an inhibitor for learning, teaching and research activity." The legal advice will pertain to the UK but I thought it an interesting idea and still relevant to Australia.
Currently Victorian TAFE's are not audited and do not remunerate for their use of copyrighted material in digital formats but I was told at a meeting last week that it will occur in the next 12-18 months and we will have to comply with copyright and remunerate through CAL in the digital world just as we do in the hard print world. This will possibly include an audit on copyrighted materials used in TAFEVC delivery or made available to students via intranets. I'll keep you informed as this develops.
Please contact the IT Department if you have difficulty downloading/accessing the animation.

2008 Horizon report
2008 Horizon Report Australia-New Zealand Edition
http://www.nmc.org/pdf/2008-Horizon-Report-ANZ.pdf
(Please note that you may have trouble reading the text of the document if you are using Adobe 7 - IT Helpdesk will be able to help with this)
December 1, 2008, Pages: 34
The 2008 Horizon Report, Australia–New Zealand Edition, is the first in a new series of regional reports. It examines emerging technologies as they appear in and affect higher education in Australia and New Zealand in particular.
The core of the report describes six areas of emerging technology that will impact higher education in Australia and New Zealand within three adoption horizons over the next five years.
The report lists
Virtual Worlds & Other Immersive Digital Environments
Cloud Based Applications
Geolocation
Alternative Input Devices
Deep Tagging
Next-generation Mobile
There were 45 members on the Advisory Board behind the report, purposely chosen to represent a broad swath of Australian education, as well as key writers and thinkers from business and industry. The Advisory Board (see page 33 of the report) included Garry Putland, General Manager education.au, and reads as a who’s who in Australasian educational technology leaders.
Each of the 6 topics is defined, there is an overview, and then a discussion of the relevance to teaching, learning, and creative expression. A sampling of applications of the particular technology then lists ways in which the application is currently used. A number of examples with links provides a comprehensive insight into what is already available.
This report is important not only for the higher education sector, but also for teachers from other sectors who want to understand where the technology is headed.

Asynchronous and synchronous e-learning
Asynchronous and Synchronous E-Learning: A study of asynchronous and synchronous e-learning methods discovered that each supports different purposes.
By Stefan Hrastinski

Pages: 5
PDF: http://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/EQM0848.pdf
Webpage:
http://connect.educause.edu/Library/EDUCAUSE+Quarterly/AsynchronousandSynchronou/47683
Today’s workforce is expected to be highly educated and to continually improve skills and acquire new ones by engaging in lifelong learning. E-learning, here defined as learning and teaching online through network technologies, is arguably one of the most powerful responses to the growing need for education.
Some researchers have expressed concern about the learning outcomes for e-learners, but a review of 355 comparative studies reveals no significant difference in learning outcomes, commonly measured as grades or exam results, between traditional and e-learning modes of delivery.
Conclusion
The media investigated in this article have been key in transforming the focus on e-learners as individuals to e-learners as social participants. A parallel move has occurred toward Web 2.0, which emphasizes the increasing use of the web to support social relations. This shift will surely lead to new ways of collaborating in online education. Initial efforts include the adoption in educational settings of emerging media such as virtual worlds, blogs, wikis, and video sharing, and synchronous software that supports audio and video.
An essential challenge is to critically study the benefits and limitations of emerging types of asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid e-learning. This will facilitate understanding of the complex task ahead—taking advantage of emerging media in ways that benefit learning.
