Persuasion as a leadership attribute

Effective leaders don’t just make critical decisions and establish strategic plans; they also communicate in ways that inspire and convince others to act on their behalf. Servant leaders rely on persuasion and cooperation to get the job done, rather than coercion or manipulation. Persuasion benefits all parties involved and is a powerful leadership attribute to hone and employ.

Persuasive Leadership Defined

Persuasive leaders are those who use conviction and reason to guide others to adopt an idea, attitude, or action. They make their pleas personal and tangible, ensuring there is a high degree of authenticity when communicating their wants and needs to others. They understand that a problem well defined and grounded in experience will gain higher acceptance and greater cooperation from others. Therefore, they relate their experience and understanding of the problem before explaining or exploring the solution.
Servant leaders who use persuasion always endeavor to bring benefit to everyone and strive for the betterment of others over self. They seek to build consensus within groups rather than force a minority judgment or decision on everyone. They also avoid actions where one person (or group) benefits at the cost of another.
Effective leaders know when the timing is right to use persuasion to advance the mission of the organization and with whom to use this tactic. In fact, the ability to be persuasive directly impacts the following leadership domains.

Edition 17 of The Knowledge Tree e-journal: Youth Learning the E-asy Way – now published!
http://login.alumni.net.au/ch/1cgq04c/568900/3dd83522d.html
Edition 17 explores how industry and registered training organisations (RTOs) are using e-learning to inspire young learners!A range of articles, case studies, interviews and a dynamic panel discussion give perspectives on engaging Gen Y learners, such as through the use of mobile devices for apprentices in the workplace and training within virtual worlds.
The content of Edition 17 provokes thinking and questioning on the learning of Gen Y, tensions between Web 2.0 ‘fun’ learning and more formal learning; and access to Internet-based technologies and duty of care issues.

MOVEMBER pledge - re Melissa

As we are all aware, several of our colleagues have pledged themselves for the above cause. I am writing to gain support from all and help these guys achieve whatever target that they want to meet. I understand how some of us have no time or feel daunted by the sound of donating on line, some of us don't even own a credit card!

With the support and agreement of all concerned; Mr. Peter Whitley as the CEO, Alex Terranova as the team leader, I have placed 3 cash tins where we can put in our donations. Yallourn staff can donate at the Reception, Morwell staff can do so at the Reception or Waratah Training Restaurant. Any donation is good donation as far as we are concerned, small change to one will be a big change when combine!

So please open up your coin purse and let's give these guys our full support, they deserved one. I would also appreciate it if you can inform your students as well. Prostate cancer and depression do not discriminate; they touch anyone, no matter who you are.

These cash tins will remain at these points till Friday 28th November after which they will be collected and counted. All concerned with this drive will then donate all funds on behalf of the students, customers and Staff & Management of GippsTAFE to these 2 Foundations.

Vocational education community online (VECO)

About VECO

VECO is an online community for those involved in school to post school transition. It is both a support network for practitioners and a rich information source based on the expertise of the participants.

VECO began in 1997, with a new approach to providing support and networking opportunities for coordinators of structured workplace learning programs. Initiated by the Australian Student Traineeship Foundation (ASTF) - now the Enterprise & Career Education Foundation (ECEF), VECO is run in partnership with Aussie SchoolHouse.

VECO fosters communication, sharing of resources, development of professional networks and recognition of achievement through the use of Internet and communications technologies including email and World Wide Web tools.

VECO has now grown to be a network of people who use a common set of tools to participate in online events and activities. The VECO website supports and records this activity, captures the collective wisdom developed by it and hosts the tools that are used.

A resource Jo Menzies would like to share....Would be very useful for group work!

Hi
I have just been looking at an online tool from Futurelab that may have some potential. Exploratree looks like it would be good for students organising and structuring thinking on a topic. It has lots of different templates for ways to look at a topic and it allows you to save share and present your plan, create your own template as well as work collaboratively on one. Could be good for planning research presentations , essays and the like.
the site is here http://www.exploratree.org.uk/
and there is an intro video here http://www.exploratree.org.uk/movie.php
See what you think.
Some info from the site below
Jo
The Exploratree web resource has been developed by Futurelab and emerged out of our work on the Enquiring Minds project. It provides a series of ready-made interactive 'thinking guides' or 'frameworks' which can support students' projects and research. Thinking guides support the thinking or working through of an issue, topic or question and help to shape, define and focus an idea and also support the planning required to investigate it further. Exploratree guides can be used as a basis for whole class discussion, or emailed to individuals or groups to complete. They can also be used as a presentation tool to share your findings and thinking with others. As well as providing a set of ready to use thinking guides, which are completely customisable and shareable, Exploratree also enables teachers and students to create their own simply and easily.
With Exploratree you can:
Use our ready-made thinking guides
Make a new thinking guide from scratch
Use it to set class projects
Print them out (they can go as big as A0)
Change and customise thinking guides, you can add or change text, shapes, images etc.
As a teacher, you can set up the sequence that you want the thinking guide to be revealed in, so that you can stage the thinking activity
You can fill in a thinking guide and complete your project on the website
You can present your project
You can send your thinking guide to a whole group of people
You can submit a thinking guide for comments, so it can't be edited but just reviewed
Work in groups on the same thinking guide

A Practicum opportunity and a great opportunity to share...

Alan's posting in this newsletter is a great way to share a resource you too may find of use. It also provides a great opportunity for him to reflect upon this process and use this for Sections C or D for his Practicum.

Do you have a resource you would like to share with others?

How might this benefit your professional practice and that of your colleagues?

If you would like to contribute to this newsletter, please email me at:

shalenew@gippstafe.vic.edu.au

A resource Alan would like to share...

Here is a bit on behaviourism, which is tied up to personality, and says that ones' environment causes ones' behaviour.

First of all, is self observation.
Not too deep, just have a look at yourself . If you find yourself meeting your standards and life is loaded with self praise and reward, you'll have high self- esteem. If, on the other hand, you find yourself failing to meet your standards and are punishing yourself, you will have low self- esteem.Simple eh?

A few recommendations from Allbert Bandura:

http://webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/bandura.html

1. Self observation-know thyself! make sure you have a fairly accurate picture of your behaviour.

2.Standards-make sure your standards aren't set too high.Don't set yourself up for failure.
But, make sure your standards are also not too low as they become meaningless.

3.Self-response-use self rewards, not punishments and celebrate victories, don't dwell on your failures!

Hope it's not too deep, as it's part of Banduras' theories on social learning.I think all learning should be social and believe some sessions on the dip vet could be held in a pub over lunch and a few drinks! Wonder what the outcomes'd be?

Cheers,
Al

Learning Communities - Hume Global Learning Village; Visy Care Learning Hubs
August 26, 2008
OVERVIEWThis event focuses on exploring the nature of learning communities and showcases the developments within the Hume Global Learning Village and Visy Care Learning Hubs. The event provides an overview of the focus, history and structure of the Hume Global Learning Village and showcases the VISY care project as an example of a community collaborative learning project
1. TARGET GROUPThis event is developed for those VET practitioners wishing to learn more about a world leading community collaborative organisation in which schools, community organisations, enterprises, public and private RTOs and Higher education work in a seamless education and training provision to meet the needs of a challenged and diverse community. Target number: Maximum 60
2. EVENT STRUCTURE AND METHODOLOGYPolicy and Management practice contextGeorge Osborne, Manager Learning Communities (Hume City council), explores the policy context under which the Hume City Council provided leadership for the development of a collaborative learning environment to support the learning needs of residents and those working within a defined municipality. The focus is on how the Council drew together the community, community agencies, education and training agencies to provde a seamless connection to learning opportunities for residents of the Hume municipality. The Hume Global learning Village has been highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister as a world class exemplar of an integrated approach to community learning.
Implementation context - Case study - Sally Anne Wilkinson will present the VISY Care program. This program, conducted by VU, examines the processes to identify needs and bring stakeholders together.
The Case study:In 1999 a group of men who were working in the justice and judiciary system were brought together by a key community liaison worker in the Victoria Police and two lawyers. This group included Victorias most senior Supreme Court judge Justice Frank Vincent (soon to be Chancellor of Victoria University- (VU) and a range of colleagues. Their motivation was to be part of a solution instead of a part of the constant stream of young lives that were coming into the courts. The group sought advice from Dr Robyn Broadbent, a highly regarded youth expert from VU. The success of previous Visy Cares hub in Dandenong and international models was known and the concept of a co located youth service ( a one stop shop model) had appeal as it would leave the physical structure in the community and be accessible to the full community. Victoria University has a long standing commitment to the western region of Melbourne. Encapsulated in the latest policy framework of the University as ; To resource three initiatives for a better life in Melbourne’s western suburbs and to share this knowledge with other communities in Australia or overseas that face similar challenges. (Taken from Visy Cares Hub Report 2007) The Visy Cares hub has been in operation now for 8 months, it provides an entry point for training and support of young people, including lifeskills and recreational programs, legal aid, refugee support, housing, mental health services student support, especially language and literacy, career advice, community links. This presentation will explore the drivers and pitfalls in the set up and discuss how, in a mere 8 months there has been a significant change in retention, training and employment outcomes for youth in the West.
